Garrett Borns, stage name stylized as BØRNS, is currently generating a lot of activity around his single Electric Love. The track has done well at Alternative and Triple A radio and is now making a refreshing mark in the Top 40 world, a not-so-easy crossover move that is a testament to the catchiness of his electro-alt-pop sounds and hooks along with his heartfelt and relatable lyrics that revolve around love and relationships. It even got a boost when Taylor Swift Tweeted to her 65 million followers that she thought it was an “instant classic”…not a shabby seal of approval!
Born and raised in Grand Haven, Michigan, Garrett was an accomplished artist (and a magician!) from a young age, winning a National Scholastic Art Award and an art and design college scholarship. As so many aspiring young creatives do, he moved to New York City for a time before relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, which proved to be a great fit. Soon after switching coasts he found himself shacked up in a treehouse on the outskirts of the city and the breakout track 10,000 Emerald Pools was penned with the help of alternative dance artist Kennedy. The track made the rounds online and received support from influential tastemaker outlets such as KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.
The buzz attracted A&Rs and a deal was inked with powerhouse Interscope Records, which quickly helped put the Candy EP into the world in the fall of 2014 with 10,000 Emerald Pools as the featured song. The race was on in 2015 as he made the live television circuit with appearances that included The Tonight Show, Conan, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
BØRNS hit the road hard, beginning with a string of dates supporting August 2015 Emerging Artist of the Month, MisterWives, on their Our Own House tour. That summer he landed a great slot opening for Charli XCX and Bleachers on the Charli and Jack Do America Tour. Those dates were interspersed with key festival gigs like Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, Life is Beautiful, and Austin City Limits, not to mention headlining his own club dates across North America and Europe. Fast-forward to the present: a swing through Australia was just completed and later this month he heads back to Europe with Halsey. Then it is back to America for his own headline shows, dates with M83, Mumford & Sons, and of course festival season, where he’s currently slated to play Coachella, Sasquatch!, Boston Calling, and Bonnaroo.
Somewhere in all of that the artist was able to write and record material that became his debut LP, Dopamine, released in October, which is comprised of 11 danceable, falsetto-lead, alternative pop tracks that should give his team plenty to work with throughout 2016. Electric Love is currently #196 on the Ultimate Songs chart and has legs at Top 40 while 10,000 Emerald Pools has circled back around at Alternative radio, giving him wide exposure to different audiences. Add to that some strong TV sync placements for Southwest Airlines, Hulu, Victoria’s Secret, and Fiat/Chrysler and the fact that he is regularly appearing live in so many markets and you’ve got an act that is ready to blow.
