This folksy Canadian Alt-Country outfit, also wonderfully described as “popgrass,” is making an impression on U.S. audiences with their current single, Spirits, which is doing very well at Alternative and Triple A radio. For fans of the genre and those north of the border there is no revelation here, but they are surely new to the vast majority of U.S. listeners. People are easily falling for the driving rhythms of drummer Jeremy Drury and bassist Darryl James, the personable, relatable, and intensely cathartic lyrics and delivery from lead singer and songwriter Simon Ward, and the deft melodic interplay between violinist Isabel Ritchie, lead guitarist Jon Hembrey, and David Ritter on keys. The Strumbellas can move your heart from the dancefloor to a lonely back porch at dusk to a full-throttle road trip escape with ease.
The band saw its beginnings in Toronto in 2008. Most of the members were originally friends from Lindsay, Ontario while Ritter and Ritchie were added via a Craigslist ad…talk about serendipity! They released a self-titled EP in 2009 which gained them footing online and within the Toronto music scene. Over the next few years consistent touring and key live performances at marquee venues and festivals built experience and momentum that went into their debut LP, 2012’s My Father and the Hunter. The independently-released album was nominated for a 2013 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year (Group); something special was clearly brewing. Six Shooter records recognized this, signed the band, and released We Still Move on Dance Floors in 2013. This second album won the 2014 Juno Award in the same category they were nominated for in 2013.
The sextet next signed with the influential Glassnote Records for the release of their third album, Hope, which comes out on Aprill 22nd (you can preorder it here). At the end of February they made their U.S. late night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and in March made a blazing run through the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX that included 11 performances and myriad interviews and marketing events in a mere 4 days. Tried, tested, and true touring will continue well into 2016 with radio show and festival appearances, including the 25th installment Lollapalooza to be held in Chicago. Let the singalongs commence!
