#14 Emerging Artists chart
#1,380 Ultimate 100 Artists chart
Bishop Briggs debuted on our Emerging Artists chart in May and has been one of the most consistent entries ever since on the strength of her soulful, rhythmic, and rather dark electro-pop sound. Born in London, steeped in Japan and Hong Kong, and residing in Los Angeles, the initially enigmatic singer has been evolving in our sights for some time now. First it was karaoke in Tokyo as a child, then more formal training in Hong Kong, and finally honing her skills at Musician’s Institute and playing any and every gig she could land around LA.
Her first spike in activity caught our attention when the head-bobbing cut, Wild Horses, was quite appropriately featured in an Acura commercial in late 2015 and viewers wanted to hear more of that powerful voice.
After signing with Teleport Records in a deal with the iconic Island Records, her single, River, went to Alternative radio where it did very well, making it to the Top 5. Wild Horses is now coming back to the forefront as it is already in rotation at thirty stations (including in big markets like Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, San Diego, Denver, and Portland) and will soon crack into the Alternative chart where another solid showing is more than likely.
Bishop Briggs (named after her family’s Scottish hometown, Bishopbriggs) made her television debut in a big way, performing River on The Tonight Show at the beginning of August; she then brought Wild Horses to Late Night with Seth Myers in October. She has also received positive coverage from Paste, Idolator, The Fader, and Noisey, where a view of the focused, emotionally plugged-in creator behind the music becomes clear.
The singer played live consistently through spring and summer including radio shows, festivals, headline club gigs, and dates with Passion Pit. All of this culminated with some mega-choice opening slots for Coldplay in August and September along with Alessia Cara. She is currently in the final leg of a swing with Kaleo and The Wind + The Wave and will cap the year off with Untapped Music Festival in Dallas and a couple of holiday radio shows in Tampa and San Diego. Look for her to be even more active next year.
With three other “trap-soul” gems for fans to dive into, Pray (Empty Gun), The Way I Do, and Be Your Love as well as a full album on the horizon, there is no doubt that Bishop Briggs will be doubling down in 2017!
