#6 Emerging Artists chart
#876 Ultimate 100 Artists chart
This month’s band brings us a fresh wave of down-to-earth, relatable country music with a pop sheen and rock foundation. LANCO, which is short for “Lancaster & Company,” is a five-piece consisting of Brandon Lancaster (lead vocals), Eric Steedy (guitar), Jared Hampton (keys), Chandler Baldwin (bass), and Tripp Howell (drums), who came together in Nashville from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. The band formed in 2013 and did their thing the classic way: playing bars, recording with friends when they could, and putting together their repertoire along the way.
We love a good origin story, many of our Emerging Artists come with one, and LANCO is no exception. While working concessions at a Keith Urban concert Brandon had the opportunity to introduce himself to veteran country and rock producer Jay Joyce. The clearly grounded and humble developing artist didn’t mount an over-the-top charge as many might, and that vibe played out well. The conversation did turn to LANCO’s music which lead to an invite from Jay to discuss things further. After spending some time with Brandon and the rest of the band Jay took on production of their self-titled, four-song, debut EP in 2015. Their second EP, Extended Play, was then released by Arista Nashville in the spring of 2016.
The first single to get a shot was Long Live Tonight, which did well at country radio and provided ample introduction to the new act’s infectious, youthful energy and positive sensibility. The real kicker now comes with Greatest Love Story, which is already commandeering heartstrings everywhere and even finding a special place as “our song” for many fans.
As any wise group of up-and-comers does, the guys know that the live experience is where they can really show their stuff and win fans. Rolling Stone noted this after a live taping in Austin for Audience Network last May. Scrolling back through their calendar it is clear that they have basically lived on the road for the last couple of years, playing clubs as well as gigging with The Band Perry, The Swon Brothers, Old Dominion, Parmalee, Dustin Lynch, Dwight Yoakam, and Frankie Ballard. In winter 2015-2016 LANCO supported Eli Young Band’s tour and last summer they made their mark on the festival circuit, including Watershed, Lollapalooza, and Faster Horses.
Recent runs with Brothers Osborne, Dierks Bentley, and Kane Brown flowed into a current string of headline dates and a spot at Stagecoach. More big stages are up next this spring and summer, CMA Music Fest, Bonnaroo, and Faster Horses. The timing is terrific as Greatest Love Story should be widespread by then and LANCO’s debut album won’t be long in coming. It seems that the Emerging Artists chart won’t be able to contain this act for long!
