#24 Emerging Artists
#3,237 Ultimate 100 Artists
Is 22-year-old Australian musician Tash Sultana is a one-woman band? A guitar shredding alternative rocker? A multi-instrumentalist and beatboxing live loop master? A lilting soul singer with deep, modern, urban vibes?
She’s all of these things, and more. Powerhouse is a word we can’t quite shake when reviewing her work, so we’re rolling with it. 22-year-old Australian musician Tash Sultana is a powerhouse. We can’t think of anyone else doing anything like what she is doing right now. It’s probably easiest to just go back a ways, to her most-viewed “live bedroom recording” on YouTube, and let this performance of Jungle explain for itself. Take your time, we’ll wait…
…right?!?! And in the less than eighteen months since this went up, her rig, her gigs, and her performances have only gotten bigger and bigger. The Murder to the Mind video gives a really good look…we bet former Emerging Artist Robert DeLong could talk gear with Tash for days!
Tash was a born musician, learning on her own from a young age, now able to play nearly a dozen different instruments. Some rough times as a teenager led to busking on the streets of her hometown, Melbourne, being her best option to make ends meet. It’s clear that this experience became the foundation of what she has developed in the years since.
Her homemade YouTube videos quickly went viral in 2016 and by the end of the year she had won the Unearthed Artist of the Year J Award and saw Jungle and Notion voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, at #3 and #32, respectively.
By the fall of 2016, her debut EP, Notion, was released and Sultana was playing non-stop sold out gigs in every corner of Australia, including many festival appearances. She played key major market club gigs in the U.S. in February of this year, also sold out, establishing an American beachhead as Jungle received tastemaker Alternative and Triple A radio airplay. She even got in a terrific NPR Tiny Desk concert, a platform see seems to have been tailor-made for.
It was then back Down Under for more shows and festivals like Laneway and Splendour in the Grass; this cool video from a performance in Sydney gives a further idea of the energy that this young artist has been generating. In June her Notion world tour kicked off in London and commenced to crisscross Europe all summer, where it will culminate back in London next week (9/14). Things pick back up in Toronto on September 28th and the North American headline dates will continue through October.
It is always wonderful to follow an artist that flourishes from adversity, let alone with the massive, raw, and positive energy that Tash Sultana exudes wherever she plays. Her latest single, the mesmerizing Murder to the Mind, continues to expand her palette of deeply soulful vibes, and of course ripping guitar solos, that would have made Prince a fan. We’re excited to hear that her debut album will be released next April and that she has no plans to slow down the touring schedule any time soon.
