Ultimate Roundup: Top 20 Artists of 2017

Now that we’ve recapped the Top 20 Songs of 2017, it is time to see which artists end the year at the top of the musical hill. It takes a very strong and steady combination of activity across streaming, broadcast, social, and sales to make the list, and it is easy to see why all of these entertainers have done so well this year.

  1. Ed Sheeran
  2. Bruno Mars
  3. Imagine Dragons
  4. Luis Fonsi
  5. Kendrick Lamar
  6. Drake
  7. The Weeknd
  8. Migos
  9. Post Malone
  10. Future
  11. DJ Khaled
  12. The Chainsmokers
  13. Rihanna
  14. Eminem
  15. twenty one pilots
  16. Sam Hunt
  17. Shawn Mendes
  18. Katy Perry
  19. Lady Gaga
  20. Chris Stapleton

In 2015 Taylor Swift was #1, in 2016 Drake had the honor, and this year it is…

Ed Sheeran! The dual-release of the two singles, Castle on the Hill and Shape of You, put him in the #2 spot on January 12th and then #1 on January 19th. He then held #1 or #2 into April, with his third album, ÷ (divide), coming out on March 3rd. He hasn’t left the Top 10 since, including the bulk of that time in The Top 5. That is impressive, no two ways about it. Ed also ends the year with two of the Top 20 SongsShape of You at #2 and Perfect at #20.

At #2, Bruno Mars once again proves himself to be a true funk ambassador in the pop music world. He ends the year propelled by two entries in the Top 10 song finishers, That’s What I Like at #3 and 24k Magic at #7.

#3 Imagine Dragonare the only rock group to make the Top 10 this year, and along with twenty one pilots (at #15 this year) are the only ones to do it in the last three years…crossover appeal, indeed. They also lay claim to back-to-back Top Songs entries with Thunder at #5 and Believer at #6.

Puerto Rican star Luis Fonsi‘s Despacito was his mainstream breakout track in the United States, no doubt, and that alone earns him the #4 spot. The remix version ends the year as the #1 song and has acted as the leader for a whole bunch of awesome Latin songs and artists that are taking hold of the American fans, as well as more exciting collaborations. We love it!

Kendrick Lamar grabs #5 doing it the only way he knows how: his way. He once again delivered a uniquely classic hip-hop album with DAMN. and sees HUMBLE. as the #11 song overall for the year.

Back in September, 2015 a new artist named Post Malone debuted on the Emerging Artists chart and this year he finishes in the Top 10 of all artists in the land, at #9. That is the kind of warm and fuzzy we love when we get to watch an artist develop and grow into their full potential. If his two Top 20 songs, #14 Congratulations (ft. Quavo) and #17 rockstar (ft. 21 Savage), are any indication, we’ll see Post Malone back on this list again.

#16 Sam Hunt earned this year’s only Country song to finish in the Top 20, with Body Like a Back Road landing all the way up at #4. He held the #1 spot on Ultimate Country Artists for 24 weeks this year, including a 9-week run, and has only been out of the Top 10 there for 2 weeks, both in January. WOW! Along with #20 Chris Stapleton, whose rise has been fun to watch, he represents the genre well here.

As always, we are so happy to see all of these musicians do so well. This also sets us up for our absolute favorite chart of the year: Top Emerging Artists of 2017 is up next!
