A young rapper out of Florida named Kodak Black first debuted on the chart back in January, 2016 and then really started to surge last winter. At just about this time last year he entered the Top 10, then the Top 5, then rode the #1 spot for four consecutive weeks before graduating by debuting at #77 on Ultimate 100 Artists on February 16th. He finishes the year 30th overall and sees Tunnel Vision end the year as the 61st most active song.
Khalid first came across our radar in the summer of 2016, just after he graduated high school in El Paso, Texas and began recording material. Things moved quickly and he made his Emerging Artists debut on October 20th, 2016. The release of his debut album, American Teen, propelled him into the Ultimate 100 Artists in March. He finishes the year as the 41st most popular artist overall, is currently #35, and has 3 of this week’s Ultimate 100 Songs, including a collaboration with Marshmello. Khalid is also nominated for three Grammy Awards of his own, including Best New Artist, and two for his feature on Logic‘s 1-800-273-8255 along with Alessia Cara.
Country singer Luke Combs is another artist that we caught a breeze of data from in his early stages, way back in December of 2015. He debuted on Emerging Artists in September of 2016 and graduated at the end of last March. His songs Hurricane and When It Rains It Pours finish the year among the most active on Ultimate Country Songs.
Julia Michaels began her career writing songs that were recorded by big time stars; think Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, and Gwen Stefani to get an idea. Julia then stepped up front as the lead performer with her single, Issues, that came out in January (which ends the year at #31 overall). Within the span of about a month she debuted on Emerging Artists, took over #1, then graduated into Ultimate 100 Artists the first week of March. Not a year has gone by and she’s now nominated for Best New Artist and Song of the Year Grammy Awards!
For the serious hardware fans out there, we mentioned that Khalid and Julia Michaels are up for Grammy Awards. Well, they are two of a baker’s dozen of current and former Emerging Artists nominated for the prestigious awards, get the rundown HERE and feel free to check out the squads from 2016 HERE and 2015 HERE!
